Financial Support for students

The allowance and grant system of WSUS, which is subsidised by the Ministry of Education and Sports and covers the following: social allowances, funds for students with disabilities, academic achievement grants, maintenance grants, Minister’s grants for special academic achievements and Minister’s grants for outstanding achievements in sports.

Social allowances:
Social allowance is granted each semester by the Faculty Funds and Grants Committee on student’s application, regardless of a mode or a field of study. The required documents are: application form and information on family income.
The support is income assessed; consequently whether a particular person is eligible to get an allowance or not, is determined by the student’s family income obtained in a given academic year.
The allowance is paid out in instalments on monthly basis into the student’s bank account. In the academic year 2004/2005 it was PLN 550 per month.

Special funds for the students with disabilities:
This form of support is granted each semester by the Faculty Funds and Grants Committee on student’s application, regardless of a mode or a field of study. The required documents are: an application form and decision on disability issued by a proper institution.
The instalments are paid out on monthly basis into the student’s bank account. In the academic year 2004/2005 it was PLN 300 per month.

Academic achievement grants:
This form of financial support is granted to students with high average grade for the previous academic year. The basis for the grant is an arithmetic mean of all pass and exam grades obtained for two previous semesters.
In the academic year 2004/2005 the lowest arithmetic mean for the grant was 4.2 and the payments amounted to PLN 200, PLN 300, PLN 500, PLN 700 or PLN 1,000; determined by how high the arithmetic mean grade was.

Grants for achievements in sports:
The support is for high performance sportsmen or sportswomen in national or international sports competitions on condition they have successfully gone through the first year of their studies.

Maintenance grants:
Students facing an unforeseen crisis that results in additional expenditure can apply for this emergency support, which is granted by the Dean on a student’s application. Students in hardship can receive the grant twice a year.

Minister’s grants for special academic achievements:
Minister’s grants are for students who have particularly outstanding achievements in their course of study. They are granted by the Education Minister on the Senate’s motion submitted by the Rector.

Minister’s grants for outstanding achievements in sports:
Minister’s grants are for high performance sportsmen or sportswomen who have achieved outstanding results in national or international sports competitions and have successfully gone through the first year of their studies. They are granted by the Education Minister on the Senate’s motion submitted by the Rector.

Other forms of financial support
Journalism competitions

WSUS alongside with major editorial offices regularly organise journalism competitions. The winner stands a chance to get the Rector’s award which is a student’s record book and free education at our School (no tuition fees are collected).

Loans and credits for students
Pursuant to the Act of 17th July 1998 on Loans and Credits for Students, the rules and schemes for financing education are clearly set. Loans are granted for all students who are Polish citizens and under 25 years of age; regardless of the institution type (state or non-state) and mode of studies.
The banks that are accredited to provide students with loans in Poland are: Pekao SA, PKO BP, Bank Przemysłowo-Handlowy SA, Kredyt Bank PBI SA, BGŻ SA, BZ WBK SA, Górnośląski Bank Gospodarczy SA, Bank Ochrony Środowiska SA.
The loans are granted for the duration of a student’s education period ( up to 6 years). The loan is paid in monthly instalments for 10 months per year. Students repay the loan a year after they have graduated from a Higher Education Institution, the time of repayment does not exceed the double period for which the loan was granted.
On the basis of current laws and regulations students who have graduated from a Higher Education Institution in a group of 5% best graduates are eligible to a 20% credit waiver. The banks process only those applications that are certified by the Dean or any other authorised persons and submitted to the bank by students themselves. Banks usually accept only those applications that have been authorised and signed by the Rector of a given institution or by the Vice-Rector authored by the Rector himself; or by the Dean or finally by the Vice-Dean authorised by the Dean. For a credit or a loan to be waived the banks take into consideration only those students who on graduation are classified as the best at a particular Higher Education Institution and not only at a given faculty or a field of study.
