| | | Extra-mural and leisure activities Each year the WSUS Career Office organises Conferences on Entrepreneurship. Their aim is to fight unemployment and to stimulate young people to take an active role in searching for a job and joining the job market. During the conferences the following issues are tackled: micro-loans and credits for graduates and employers creating new jobs within the framework of the First Job programme; job market needs and their description for the graduates of each faculty; methods of searching for a job in Poland and in the European Union; and finally the promotion of self- employment.
Within the framework of extramural activities, as it has been already mentioned, the WSUS Foreign Language Study Department organises Spanish and Estonian language courses at different levels.
In the Poznan School of Social Sciences the road to knowledge passes not only through lecture rooms but also through activities conducted during the work of various scientific groups in such areas as: interpersonal communications, personal development and advertising. There is also a student’s film club, where regular film shows (Prowincjonalia Filmowe) are held during which the main artistic events and happenings are presented and in particular off-mainstream films are shown.
The interpersonal group has existed since 2001, and meetings are held once a week. The subject-matter discussed during the classes are: time management, communications and negotiations issues and assertiveness training. There is also the possibility of participating in workshops organised outside the school or the city.
The personal development group has been running since 2001 and its aim is to familiarise its members with criteria for self-judgement and to get the skills in creating self-definition, which are fundamental for finding a personal job career path. The most crucial factor here is an attempt to analyse personal gifts of individual students. A lot of WSUS students are interested in having a deeper insight into their job predispositions in a selected field of study.
This can be done due to specially prepared simulations giving the possibility of finding out personal reactions in communication situations that are similar to those of manager’s working conditions.
Twice a year WSUS organises also Interpersonal Skills workshops outside the school or the city. The aim is to develop proper skills and have a deeper insights into the knowledge related to communications, assertiveness, creative thinking and self-presentation techniques. The advertising group has been running since 2003 and focuses mainly on contemporary culture and the role of advertising in mass culture. There two major subject- matter blocks: the first one mainly deals with sociogenesis of advertising, critical theory of advertising, the language of advertising and means of expression; the other block concentrates on the principles of organising a good advertising campaign, effective and efficient means of expression, aesthetics in advertising, ethical issues and the role of advertising in promotion. During the classes students can use the following teaching aids: CD presentations, magazines, albums, arts and advertising periodicals, all the books available at the School’s library, computer labs, TV sets, TV cameras and multimedia overhead projectors. These tools are to help them present their own ideas and advertising campaign projects. Students meet once a week.
WSUS students have also a chance to participate in journalistic workshops, interesting meeting with politicians, scientists, workers of the ministries, journalists and actors. The School has its own ‘Bel Canto’ chamber choir and student’s cabaret. There are also numerous arts exhibitions (paintings, photographs, graphics) The authors of the works are WSUS students, who also publish their own bulletin called ‘Nasz Glos’ (Our Voice)
